They only control the volume when I’m in the app. When the app is running in the background, the buttons control the phone volume.

You need to enable the option Lock Screen controls + see Xiaomi | Don’t kill my app! to give exceptions to Yatse to properly work in background.
Enabling lock screen control fixed it, thanks!
